DWQR has issued a second enforcement notice in respect of manganese at Loch Eck water treatment works, the supply that serves Dunoon and much of Cowal. This enforcement notice follows on from an earlier notice requiring design of a manganese removal process and will ensure construction is completed by 2012.

We are very sad to announce the untimely death of Colin McLaren, the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland after a brave battle against cancer. Colin worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of Scotland's drinking water and he will be greatly missed by all in the Scottish water industry.

DWQR has recently gained accreditation to the ISO 9001 international standard. This is a quality management system that demonstrates that our procedures and practices are of a consistent and high quality and that DWQR has a focus on the requirements of our customers.

DWQR recently inspected Scottish Water's two main laboratories at Edinburgh and Inverness. Having conducted a thorough inspection over 5 days, DWQR is delighted to report that both laboratories were operating to an extremely high standard.

It is with much regret that DWQR learned of the sad death of Professor Huw Smith on 25 October 2010. Professor Smith was a world-renown expert in parasitology and was Director of Service at the Scottish Parasite Diagnostic Laboratory based at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow.

All sites tested in Scotland met the strict standard for Metaldehyde with the exception of Forehill where, although some of the samples exceeded the standard, DWQR can confirm that there was no risk to public health.

DWQR representative took part in a workshop in Bucharest, arranged by the European Commission to help Romanians to implement the Drinking Water Directive.

Drinking water remains safe to drink following the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Ash from the cloud is not expected to have an effect on the quality of Scotland's drinking water.

Occasionally things do go wrong. When this happens, DWQR investigates to ensure that all issues have been addressed and lessons learned to minimise the likelihood of errors being repeated. Summaries of DWQR investigations are now available on the DWQR website.

Despite the freezing weather, Scottish Water has worked hard to ensure that the required water samples are taken at treatment works, service reservoirs and consumers' taps and that these arrive safely back at their accredited laboratory where they are analysed. Although it has not been possible to collect a small number of samples, DWQR is satisfied that quality standards have been maintained throughout the cold weather.
