Elgol WTW, Skye: Persistent Failures of Iron and THMs - Summer 2009
An incident report was requested by DWQR due to the number of failing samples received from this supply. Scottish Water's incident report identifies the steps that operational staff have taken in an attempt to improve water quality. This includes the replacement of filter media and flushing of the distribution system. Whilst these measures have had some effect, any benefit was relatively short-lived and sample failures have continued to occur. DWQR audited the site on October 2nd 2009 and confirmed that operational practices at the works are good, but the treatment process that is present at the works is not sufficient to achieve the required quality standard. In their incident report, Scottish Water acknowledge this and commit to constructing a new works for Elgol (or supplying it from another nearby works that already complies with the standards). This work is due to be completed in the next investment period, commencing next year, and DWQR will press for as early a completion date as possible.
