The Cryptosporidium (Scottish Water) Directions 2003
These Directions define how Scottish Water is to respond to the risk from the Cryptosporidium parasite as well as sampling requirements.
- These Directions came into force on 1st January 2004.
- More widespread testing is provided for Cryptosporidium to give data about background levels in water supplies.
- Scottish Water must implement the recommendations contained in the Third Report of the 'Group of Experts on Cryptosporidium in Water Supplies'.
- A framework for assessing the risk of Cryptosporidium in public water supplies in Scotland is included. This also requires Scottish Water to assign a score to each of their supplies depending on the assessed risk.
- Cryptosporidium sampling is to be done at all water treatment works while ensuring that every supply in Scotland will be tested at least once a month. The frequency of testing is based on the assessed risk and the flow through the works.
